Exit row seat in Economy helps make the journey easier

Boeing 747-400 review – Brisbane to Los Angeles on Qantas International. This is a review of an Economy flight from Brisbane to Los Angeles. Flight time 13 hours, 5 minutes.

What are the seats like?

The airline gods are on my side when I’m allocated a row of three seats between two people. Even better, we’re popped into the emergency exit row up the front.

The seat configuration is a three seats near the windows and four in the centre of the aircraft.

If you can get an exit row seat on this long-haul leg (with a spare seat between two people) you’ve got it made.

These seats can be booked in advanced for $180. It’s worth the extra dollars.

What is the cabin like?

The cabin is comfortable. A few years ago, Qantas refitted some of its 747-400s with more comfy seating usually found in an A380.

The ergonomic economy seats (except the exit row) have netted footrests. I get a blanket, pillow and a pouch with eye shades, toothbrush and toothpaste.

What about the entertainment system?

The in-flight entertainment system is impressive and has ample choice of movies, television shows, games and music.

Was the service good?

Well, the cabin crew are efficient and polite. I have no real complaints in that department.

Although, I’d have to say my husband was recently admitted to a new and very impressive Sunshine Coast Private hospital and the staff at the hospital were much friendlier.

What about the food?

Lunch is a choice between chicken salad (with potato and coleslaw) or beef ragu accompanied by mash potato and vegetables.

For dessert, there’s a tempting chocolate mousse with salted caramel fudge. Delicious!

Breakfast is a choice of cereal or a cooked breakfast. The cooked breakfast consists of eggs with Hollandaise sauce, bacon, spinach and braised beans.

There’s no chance of going hungry during the flight as there’s a snack bar stocked with sweet and savoury snacks, such as rosemary and parmesan snaps with tomato and basil pesto dip, cheese and crackers, apples, Belgian chocolate brownies and bottled water.

Why choose this flight?

If you’re travelling to North America, the connection between flights in Los Angeles is a lot easier than you think.

As the first airplane to arrive in the morning, there’s hardly any wait to get through customs and immigration.

Transferring passengers pick up their luggage after clearing customs and drop their pre-tagged bags on a belt.
