The Optimistic Traveller

I was widely travelled, exploring wherever life took me – including living in the UK, Canada, and the Middle East – before I figured out that I could turn my passion for travel into a career.

I’m a career journalist who stumbled on the travel writing world and grabbed it with both hands. And I’m definitely a “glass half full” kind of person, so it seemed like a good name for my blog. A Glass Half Full is about my love of travel and reflects my inherent optimism about life.

It was also a nod to a book I’d just written that made me the envy of many – the best-selling Great Australian Pubs (Explore Australia, 2012), for which I propped up bars all over Australia in the interests of research. It’s one of about 10 travel books that I’ve written, contributed to or edited, the latest of which is a collection of my own stories, A Glass Half Full and other travel stories (Vivid Publishing, 2014).

Born and raised in New Zealand, I’ve been writing ever since I can remember. I’ve visited almost 60 countries, and I’ve lived in Australia for nearly 30 years.

I have been a contributing writer for a number of online travel guides for the USA and UK, and am currently the Queensland specialist writer for the Daily Telegraph (UK).

Among others, my work has appeared in The Weekend Australian, The Weekend Australian Magazine, New Ltd’s Escape travel section, National Geographic Traveler, Luxury Travel, Geographical (UK), Royal Auto, The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald, Mercedes Magazine, Go Camping Australia, Vacations & Travel, Get Up & Go, OUThere, Cruise Passenger, Signature Travel & Lifestyle, and The Walkley Magazine. I am a regular feature writer and correspondent for the national travel trade newsmagazine travelBulletin.

I regularly give talks and courses on writing, freelancing and blogging, most recently at Corrugated Lines: A Festival of Words in Broome and the Margaret River Readers & Writers Festival.
