Farsighted Fly Girl

I’m a writer, blogger and author whose love for travel was passed down from my globe-trotting granny. I’ve spent most of my journalist career exploring cultures and documenting arts history. I write about travel and the cultural lens through which much of it is experienced; including music, art, food, literature and fashion.

My writing career started with my work as an arts critic, reviewing and capturing the dynamic music, art and literary scenes that have always thrived in my hometown of Chicago.

I wrote for every major Chicago publication, including the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun Times, Chicago Reader and Chicago Magazine.

I loved telling the stories of the city’s artists, musicians and spoken word performers and analysing the connections between art and life.

The turning point for my career arrived when one of my editors requested that I write a story about my adventures when I returned from a trip to Jamaica. It had never occurred to me to combine travel and writing until then.

I had grown up watching my grandmother traverse six continents with little fanfare. To me, travel was something that was part of life but I quickly discovered that it could also be a career.

Currently, I escape Chicago’s six months of cold by specialising in Caribbean and Latin American culture and travel.

I love climbing volcanoes, strolling cobblestone streets and trekking pink sand beaches. I also frequently cover Europe, Canada, Asia and any other place that offers rich cultural experiences.

My international list of credits include Hemispheres, Salon, MSN, Woman’s Day, Miami Herald, Travel + Escape, Shermans Travel, Timeout Chicago, Marriott Traveler, Relish, Brides, Go Magazine, Get Lost, Mojo and Rough Guide to Women Travel, among other publications.

I also write a bi-weekly travel column for Travel Pulse, Far-sighted Field Notes.

Although I focus on travel, I continue to write about the arts; I’m the author of the Chicago music scene guide, Exploring Chicago Blues: Inside The Scene, Past & Present (History Press).

I hold bachelors and master’s degrees in journalism and teach journalism classes as an adjunct professor at Columbia College Chicago, as well as local and online workshops.
