Mary O'Brien

I travel, I eat, I meet lovely people and I write about my adventures. I’m a freelance journalist based in Melbourne who specialises in travel, food and feature writing.

I work for Fairfax newspapers, various magazines and online publications. I write a popular weekly column, My Secret Melbourne, for The Saturday Age’s Spectrum, and contribute monthly to The Sunday Age M magazine travel section. I also write fortnightly café and providore reviews for The Weekly Review magazine.

I was on staff at The Age for 14 years and four years ago I opted for the freedom of freelancing. Over the years I have also had work published in Good Food/Epicure and Traveller sections and RoyalAuto magazine.

In the distant past, I worked in Hong Kong and Ireland. Travelling is my passion and this year I have visited France, Spain, Ireland and Fiji. Within Australia I have explored Tasmania, Perth, King Island and the Sunshine Coast hinterland. I love Victoria and most recently I have been lucky enough to write about Kyneton, Bendigo and Inverloch.

Food is my other great motivator and a recent highlight was a behind-the-scenes tour of King Island Dairy with cheesemaker Ueli Berger.

I am a member of the Australian Society of Travel Writers (ASTW) and the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA). WishYouWereThere.com.au, my new website, is a collection of my adventures or you can follow me on Twitter @MaryMOBrien1
