The Gold Coast is a destination that I am particularly passionate about as I am, believe it or not, a born and bred local. Despite spending eight years in Cairns and the Daintree I couldn’t stay away for long and have been back living on the Gold Coast for nearly as long as I was away for. Having gone through a massive period of transition here, I am now more of an ambassador than ever for my home city. The Gold Coast made me who I am today, Australia’s first professional instagrammer, a successful businesswoman and a travel photographer. The beautiful sights of home were my early inspiration and the building blocks of my career in tourism. So if you want to come to the Gold Coast for a holiday then I am THE person to ask for advice. Here are my top tips on things to do on the Gold Coast.
1-Head to the beach
Although there are so many things to do on the Gold Coast, my home region would have to be most well-known for its famous beaches.
From the very northern-most beaches right down to Snapper Rocks in the south, our beaches are world class. For family fun and safe patrolled beaches you can’t go past Main Beach, Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach.
Whether you are still awake from dancing the night away or out for a day of relaxation our beaches are great from sun up to sun down.
2-Catch a show at the Gold Coast Arts Centre
If you’re looking for things to do on the Gold Coast in the evening, catch a movie or a show at the Gold Coast Arts Centre in Bundall or else just pull up a picnic on the canal for spectacular views over the city.
3-Meet a koala
I have to confess I am a bit of a theme park addict and I especially love visiting our local animals at Dreamworld and Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. They are both easy to find with regular public transport and lots of animals to make you go “awww”.
4-Explore the Hinterland
If you’re not quite finished with animals and you’re up for a day trip I would highly recommend visiting O’Reilly’s National Park and Rainforest Retreat in our hinterland.
The free flight bird show is sure to entertain adults and kids alike. There are also boardwalks, cafes, well-signed bush walks and waterfalls as well as spectacular lookouts.
5-Visit Natural Arch
You might fit it all into one day or you could head out again but the Natural Arch in Springbrook National Park is a winner and a place that I take all my visitors when they come to the Gold Coast. It’s also fun at nighttime due to the many glowworms in the cave!
6-Stay in Surfers
Where to stay? I love the Mantra on View as it’s on the quiet side of Surfers Paradise and within walking distance of the mall and also beautiful Main Beach with it’s many restaurants, boutiques and cafes.
7-Have a coffee at my favourite cafe
And finally I am going to let you in on a real local secret, my favorite café! Lark on Stafford Avenue Main Beach specializes in big portions and great coffee and if I’m around that’s where you’ll find me.
