Macau museums are a unique bunch. From small local museums, built in former heritage buildings to the uber-modern Macau Science Museum, these Macau museums are interesting to explore.
1- Mandarin’s House
Mandarin’s House has been restored to its original grandeur and offers a wonderful window on the past.
The home of 60 rooms is surprisingly large and incorporates several architectural styles. It also covers a large area of 4,000m2 and is a must visit for those interested in history and architecture.
Building first started on the house in 1869 and extended over a few years. While now surrounded by other buildings it is thought that, when built, the home had excellent views over the Inner Harbour. It is a very open house with spacious grounds.
Extended family members moved out in the 1950s and 1960s and various rooms were rented to tenants with some 300 occupying the grounds at one stage.
When the government took over the property in 2001, some 80% of the buildings had been extensively modified. Visitors now have the opportunity to experience its faithful restoration.

2-Macau Science Centre
Learn more about science at the shiny space-age structure situated along the Macau foreshore near Fisherman’s Wharf.
Visitors will be impressed with the 3D images projected in the Space Theatre and the many hands-on displays that especially appeal to families with children.
There are 12 displays and the occasional exhibition breathes new life into the permanent displays. Topics range from space science to food science and there is a focus on interactive exhibitions.
The harbour views from the top of the centre are also another good reason for venturing down to the Outer Harbour foreshore.

3-Taipa Houses Museum
The Taipa Houses are five beautifully restored houses dating back to 1921 located in Taipa overlooking what is now a wetland.
These green and white houses were typical of houses lived in by wealthy Macanese people of the time.
They were purchased by the this Macao post in the 1980s and restored to their original grandeur. Each one has a theme – Macanese House, House of the Islands, House of Portuguese Regions, Reception House and Exhibition House.
The houses are within walking distance of other historic attractions in Taipa Village.
