You’d be forgiven for not knowing too much about Logan because it is removed from the main throughfare of cities that are both north and south of Salt Lake City. Logan is a city in Cache County, Utah, that is surrounded by beautiful mountains. Besides enjoying its lovely setting, there’s plenty of interesting history to learn about too, from museums to scenic drives and parks. Here are the top things to do in Logan.

Visiting the Mormon Temple is one of the things to do in Logan.

1- Visit Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art (NEHMA)

The Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art (NEHMA) is a modern and contemporary art museum at Utah State University that was established in 1982 through a donation from Nora Eccles.

The emphasis across this four-level facility is 20th century and 21st century American art as well as art in the American West.

The museum’s collection houses more than 5,000 pieces of art and hosts a number of temporary exhibits as well as plenty of public events, all of which are free.

2- Admire The Scenery Along Logan Canyon Scenic Drive

The Logan Canyon Scenic Drive is a must-do activity when visiting Logan, Utah.

You can take highway US-89 from Logan to Garden City on Bear Lake.

The byway is an excellent place to see spectacular fall scenery but the drive is lovely year-round.

Of course, you can simply drive along the highway but Logan Canyon Scenic Drive is a gateway to beautiful hiking, biking, climbing and fishing opportunities.

3- Tour Utah State University 

Utah State University was founded in 1888 and today it is Utah’s largest public residential campus with around 20,000 students living on or close to campus.

Even if you are not interested in studying there, Utah State University is well worth a visit.

The campus is set with the beautiful backdrop of the Wasatch mountains and the buildings are full of historic charm.

Taking a stroll along the tree-lined walkways provides visitors with an uplifting feeling.

Be sure to pop into NEHMA while you are there.

4- Ski at Beaver Mountain Resort

Beaver Mountain Resort is just 40 minutes’ drive from Logan, perfect if you want to enjoy a day on the slopes.

Beaver Mountain Resort is actually a year-round destination.

The ski season is usually between mid-December and early April, weather permitting.

There are 48 runs with a variety of trails for advanced, intermediate and beginners.

The resort also offers night skiing from 5 pm to 9 pm.

In summer you can camp or stay in one of the beautiful yurts.

The resort sits at the top of Logan Canyon at 7200 feet (2194 m) and is an excellent place for hiking and biking.

5- See The Logan Tabernacle

You can’t miss the Logan Tabernacle, which is in a prominent position on Main Street.

The tabernacle is part of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The foundations for the tabernacle were started in 1864 but the building took 27 years to complete! The architecture is a mix of Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Gothic styles.

See the tabernacle from the outside and then check out the huge organ behind the altar inside.

6- See Local Animals At Zootah

Seeing local wildlife (like red foxes) is one of the things to do in Logan, Utah at the zoo.

Zootah puts the Zoo in Utah! This community zoo has been around since 1970.

There’s seven acres of zoo to explore making it the perfect destination for families with kids.

So, what can you see at the zoo? There are a wide variety of animals including bald eagles, iguanas, reindeer, lemurs, elk, Canada Lynx, porcupines, coyotes, pythons, monkeys and more.

Zootah also hosts a number of events throughout the year including the Zoo Lights for Christmas and a spooky Boo at The Zoo event.

7- Follow The Wind Cave Trail

The Wind Cave Trail is in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest and the hike is considered moderate in level.

The hike is a 3.9-mile (6.4 km) out-and-back trail with (334 m) elevation.

The trail usually takes around 2 hours 15 minutes to complete and the best time is between March and November.

You should also consider starting out early because the trail does get very busy at peak times with hikers, runners and walkers.

Though there are beautiful views, the pièce de resistance is definitely the limestone arch cave high up in Logan Canyon.

As you walk there are plenty of information boards about the formation of the wind caves making it an educational and exciting walk.

To reach the trailhead from Main Street turn east onto Highway 89 and continue for around 7.5 miles (12 km) where you will find the trailhead on your left.

8- Visit Logan Utah Temple

The Logan Utah Temple is another of the city’s impressive religious buildings.

Standing prominently on an elevated terrace Logan Utah Temple can be seen for miles throughout the northern Cache Valley.

The temple is large, occupying an entire city block and was the second temple to ever be built in Utah.

This impressive church was built solely from volunteer labor and donations.

If you want to look inside the temple, it is best you schedule an appointment in advance though it is possible to view the temple with no appointment.

9- Explore The Logan Museum of Anthropology 

The Museum of Anthropology is another great place to visit when heading to Utah State University.

The museum came into being when an anthropology professor at the school decided to show some of the artifacts that were in the Old Main building basement.

The museum has grown a lot since then with their constant mission to educate the public on anthropology and museum studies.

10- Discover The Outdoors At Stokes Nature Center 

The Allen & Alice Stokes Nature Center is a wonderful outdoor space in the Cache Valley that welcomes people of all ages to enjoy nature.

It’s a fantastic place to learn more about Logan Canyon and the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest.

The nature center is open year-round except December and January but no matter what time of year you visit there’s plenty to enjoy.

There are a variety of guided nature hikes you can enjoy as well as snowshoe rentals in winter, outdoor classroom projects for kids and a community garden.

The center also hosts the Canyon Jam Concert Series, a great evening out for any music lover.

11- Watch A Football Game at Maverik Stadium

Maverik Stadium is Utah State University’s college football ground.

Known as the Utah State Aggies (short for agriculturalists) this Utah team is in the Mountain West college league.

See if there’s a game on when you are in town and head down to soak up the college football team atmosphere. 

Grab a couple of friends, some beers and cheer on the Aggies!

12- Hike Jardine Juniper Trail Head (Utah’s oldest tree)

The Jardine Juniper Trail is a hike to the oldest tree in Utah, the Jardine Juniper (thought to be around 3,000 years old).

The tree is certainly gnarled and weather beaten but it only makes it all the most intriguing.

The trailhead for this hike is at the Wood Camp Campground Trailhead up Logan Canyon on U.1 Highway 89.

The trail is a 3.2 miles (5.3 km) out-and-back trail with a 1479-foot (451 m) elevation gain.

This short but steep hike will get the blood pumping and the higher you go the better the views get.

The tree is huge and beautiful to look at (be sure not to climb on it).

13- Enjoy The Talents Of Lyric Repertory Company

The Lyric Repertory Company is a small summer theatre company in residence at Utah State University.

They host their productions and performances at the Caine Lyric Theatre, Morgan Theatre and Black Box Theatre.

Lyric Rep was founded in 1967 by W. Vosco Call and they’ve been producing musicals, comedies, classics, dramas and farces ever since.

Throughout June, July and August Lyric Rep produced four rolling repertory shows.

There are also other productions throughout the year.

14- Relax In Elk Ridge Park

Elk Ridge Park is the largest park in Logan.

Head to this urban park for fresh air and impressive views of the surrounding mountains.

Some of the amenities at the park include a brand-new playground, a toddler playground and a splash pad.

There are also plenty of things for sport lovers, including tennis courts, volleyball pits, softball and baseball fields and AstroTurf.

Or maybe you just want to take a gentle stroll around the park on the pathways.

15- Go Hiking In Canyon Entrance Park

This park is home to not one but three dams used to generate electricity.

Within Canyon Entrance Park you will hear people refer to First Dam, which is the location of the waterside area where people come to relax, swim, picnic and play volleyball.

Canyon Entrance Park is also a great place for a spot of fishing as the water is stocked with trout.

You can fish from designated piers and there are also viewing decks as well.

The park is also convenient for accessing the Bonneville Shoreline and the Highline Trails which are suitable for hikers and mountain bikers.

16- Chill Out In George S. Eccles Ice Center

Going ice skating is one of the fun things to do in Logan Utah.

Whether it’s the winter season or not, the George S. Eccles Ice Center is an excellent place to enjoy some time on the ice.

This ice center is a good place to head to whether you are a beginner or have plenty of experience on the ice.

Their Learn to Skate program is offered to people of all ages.

There are public ice-skating sessions as well as Freestyle figure skating sessions and Stick n Shoot if you want to practice your hockey skills.

Skating on the ice is a fun way to spend time with the family no matter how skilled you are.

17- Learn About History At The American West Heritage Center

Just 10 minutes’ drive outside of Logan off US-91S you will find the American West Heritage Center set at the foot of the Wellsville Mountains.

This hands-on museum is a wonderful place for the whole family with things for both kids and adults to enjoy.

When you head to Logan be sure to check out what events are on at American West Heritage Center as there is always a seasonal activity being added to the schedule.

There’s a petting zoo, sleigh rides in winter, and a historic adventure series where you can learn about life on the farm throughout the ages.

Other attractions include the Native American Exhibit, pony rides and tea parties on their 1917 farm.

18- Get Tickets To The Utah Festival Opera and Music Theater

The Utah Festival Opera and Music Theater is a five-week summer festival in Logan.

They also host a number of other shows throughout the year. 

The opera company performs six fully staged performances with a full orchestra.

Shows have included Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats, the Little Shop of Horrors, Guys and Dolls, and Anything Goes. 

A trip to the theater is a wonderful way to spend an evening in Logan.

19- Walk The Logan River Trail

The Logan River Trail is a walk starting at Canyon Entrance Park. 

This out-and-back trail is 5.5 miles (9 km).

The route takes around 2 hours 15 minutes to walk and is considered moderately challenging.

This is a beautiful route to enjoy in summer when the sun is shining.

The mountain scenery coupled with sections of woodland and the lapping river make for a pleasant outdoor pursuit.

20- Visit a Pioneer Museum

The Cache Daughters of Utah Pioneers Museum can be found on Main Street.

This is a wonderful museum if you are interested in learning more about the local area.

The museum’s aim is to “collect, preserve and exhibit artifacts, pictures and histories” of the Cache Valley’s early settlers.

Their collection includes a scrapbook series where you can view newspaper stories and obituaries of early Cache County pioneers.

There’s also the Daughters of Utah Pioneers Museum is another excellent pioneer museum in Lewiston is around 30 minutes’ drive north of downtown Logan.
